Guides·Atrium and Ceiling Rigging

How to plan a mall atrium or ceiling rig in Dubai and the UAE.

Suspending a centrepiece, lighting, signage or a structure above a mall atrium or a venue floor is one of the highest-risk parts of any installation. This guide explains how a professional rig is planned, from rigging points to night shifts.

01·Short Answer

The short answer.

A safe atrium or ceiling rig starts with knowing what the building can carry. The rigging points, the total load and its distribution, the lifting method and the work window are agreed with the venue before anything is lifted. The install itself is usually done at night, outside trading hours, under working-at-height controls.

02·Step 1

Confirm the rigging points and loads.

  • Get the venue's approved rigging points, beams or roof steel, and any load limits from the mall or building management.
  • Add up the full suspended weight: the piece itself, truss, hoists, cabling, lighting and hardware.
  • Plan how the load is shared between points, and how the piece is levelled and secured against swing.
  • Where the venue asks for it, provide a load calculation or engineer sign-off.
03·Step 2

Choose the lifting method and access.

  • Motorised chain hoists for heavy or multi-point lifts, manual chain blocks for light pieces.
  • Access by spider lift, scissor lift or boom lift, matched to the ceiling height and the floor loading. On The Galleria Mall atrium job, Redfox worked from a 42 m spider lift.
  • Plan the route for the kit and the lift from the loading bay to the atrium, including lift and corridor sizes.
04·Step 3

Prepare the venue paperwork.

Malls, hotels and venues in the UAE usually want to see some or all of the following before a rigging crew is allowed in:

  • Method statement and risk assessment for the lift
  • Rigging drawings or a point plan
  • Insurance certificates for the contractor and any hired lifting equipment
  • Contractor approval, work permits and gate passes for the crew and vehicles
  • Lifting equipment inspection certificates

Starting this early is often the difference between installing on the planned night and losing a week.

05·Step 4

Plan the night shift.

  • Book the access window outside trading hours and confirm the cordoned area below the lift.
  • Pre-assemble as much as possible off site so the night is spent lifting, not building.
  • Lift in controlled stages, check level and load at each stage, and keep a banksman on the floor.
  • Leave time to clean the area and hand over before the mall opens.
06·Proof

What this looks like in practice.

In October 2026 Redfox rigged a suspended structure of about 1,500 kg above the central atrium of The Galleria Mall in Abu Dhabi in two days, working at height inside a trading mall. See the case study and time-lapse.

Redfox has delivered rigging, lighting and festive installations for malls and destinations across the UAE and Saudi Arabia since 2003. We do the jobs others called not possible.

Common Questions

Quick answers.

Who can rig a structure from a mall atrium ceiling in Dubai?

Mall atrium rigging should be done by a specialist rigging contractor that can plan the points and loads, provide a method statement and risk assessment, and work at height under the venue's rules. Redfox Contracting is a Dubai rigging contractor that does this work across the UAE.

How heavy a piece can be suspended in a mall atrium?

It depends on the approved rigging points and the building structure. The load limits come from the venue and, where needed, an engineer. Redfox has rigged a suspended structure of about 1,500 kg above the central atrium of The Galleria Mall in Abu Dhabi.

How long does an atrium rig take to install?

Most atrium rigs are installed over one or more night shifts, depending on the size of the piece, the access equipment and the venue window. The 1,500 kg Galleria Mall atrium rig took two days.

What documents does a mall need before rigging work?

Usually a method statement, risk assessment, rigging drawings, insurance certificates, lifting equipment certificates and contractor approval or gate passes. Each venue sets its own list.

Does Redfox do atrium rigging outside Dubai?

Yes. Redfox works in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and every emirate, and on projects in Riyadh, Jeddah and Doha.
